How UnitedHealthcare Coverage Works for Online Therapy
UHC and Optum — the connection that matters: UnitedHealthcare uses Optum as its behavioral health network. When you see "Optum" on a therapy platform's insurance list, that means UHC coverage. They're the same network for mental health services. This is the single most useful thing to know about your UHC plan.
Copay: Most UHC members pay $10–50 per therapy session with an in-network provider. Optum-partnered platforms (like Talkspace) often have the lowest copays because of their direct integration.
Deductible: Some UHC plans require you to meet a deductible before mental health coverage kicks in. Many plans exempt mental health — check your specific plan documents or call the number on your card.
Prior authorization: Some UHC HMO plans require a referral or prior authorization for mental health services. PPO plans typically don't. If you have an HMO, ask your primary care doctor for a mental health referral first.
Medicare Advantage: If you have a UHC Medicare Advantage plan, many of the same platforms accept it through Optum. Coverage details may differ from employer-sponsored plans — verify with the platform.
EAP benefits: Many employers with UHC plans offer 3–8 free therapy sessions through an Employee Assistance Program. Ask HR before using your regular insurance benefits.
